This is pretty awesome. The iCloud service is a complete online desktop environment accessible through an internet browser (“in the cloud”). I signed up for the beta several months ago and finally got my invitation last week. The basic premise is to simply point your browser to http://os.icloud.com, where you are presented with a familiar desktop login prompt. Right now it consists mostly of basic productivity apps (calendar, email, IM, office suite, web browser, etc), with some social networking, collaboration, and file storage features built in. The plan is to increase the number of available apps over time. The applications are XML based, and the ability to create them is apparently open to anyone, with some development tools provided.
To really be feasible the application selection needs to be beefed up, usability improved in some areas, and a few other details worked out, but the concept is borderline revolutionary. Like it or not, get used to it, cloud computing seems to be where the industry is heading and you either need to embrace it or be left behind.
