Secure Copy Data Migration

I’ve been neglecting the blog lately, better stuff to come. In the meantime, for anyone that has any data migration needs that go beyond a simply copy & paste, check out Secure Copy from ScriptLogic ( http://www.scriptlogic.com/Products/securecopy ). I used this recently in a file server data migration of about 600 GB to new hardware. Where this product really shines is in its ability to re-create existing shares, copy over permissions & file attributes, and migrate local users and groups. It also handles in-use files, locked down files, and bandwidth very intelligently.  It’s a huge time saver when you’re forced to deal with any combination of a large numbers of shares, complicated permissions, and local accounts.

Secure Copy isn’t free, depending on the licensing and number of servers involved, price can range from $600 to $4,100. But, if you’re backed by a company with complicated data migration needs and a little cash to spend, it’s worth it. Tools like XCopy and Robocopy are somewhat comparable, but fall short when it comes to re-creating shares and migrating local accounts. If anyone is aware of any freeware utilities that can do what Secure Copy can, leave a comment and let me know.
